ASA is a Basel-based non-profit organisation dedicated to lifting children out of poverty through education. A dedicated group of ASA volunteers organises fundraising activities in Switzerland and France to support teaching English as a Second Language to children at a daycare centre and at an after-school programme in the Rocinha favela (slum) of Rio de Janeiro. With the money raised here, ASA provides funding to employ one teacher in the favela and to purchase all the school materials needed to teach English to approximately 40 children aged 3 – 17 each year.
ASA’s English teacher is from Rocinha. She’s an excellent teacher and she’s also a super role
model for the children and their parents as well. She teaches English classes to each of her
groups twice a week and the children love to attend. They love the English language and they know that learning English will give them a chance to improve their grades in Brazilian school. It will also give them the chance of better job opportunities as they get older and enter the work force.
ASA’s work is targeted and very valued in Rocinha. All the money we raise goes towards our
programme in Rocinha. We are grateful for your support and look forward to meeting you at one of our fundraising events.
